History of the Jukebox

Coin operated music has been around since the 19th century in the form of musical boxes, player pianos and, at the end of the century, the Edison cylinder phonograph.

The breakthrough came in 1906 when a coin operated record player with an automatic changer system - the "Gabel Automatic Entertainer - came onto the market. An acoustic, mechanical device, like the home record player of its day, it had to be wound up and sound came out of a horn speaker.

Further progress towards the jukebox proper was only possible in the 1920s, with the advent of electrically recorded and played records.

With the introduction of freely available, affordable, vinyl seven singles in the 1950’s, the jukebox came into its own and rapidly became a symbol for the emerging teenage rock 'n roll generation.

The exact origin of the name jukebox is unknown but one generally accepted theory is that it was derived from the word "jook", an old black American slang word meaning dancing - so the equipment that made the music became known as "jook box" or dukebox.

Another theory is that "jook" meant sex, and the "duke box" was the music system used in bordellos.

Whatever the origin, "jazz slang" became a popular in the 1920s, and with prohibition making otherwise respectable citizens into criminals, the public was increasingly exposed to the influences of "low life". Jukeboxes, was therefore a common feature in the speakeasies (essentially illegal shebeens).

After repeal the jukebox was marketed to a wider audience and its popularity took off throughout America, and then the rest of the world.
